CLOSED
Dim t is a new concept to eating
out - mixing Thai flavours with Chinese dishes and their website
claims to bring us a “Whole new world of Asian dining.” I was
intrigued by this and was very much looking forward to giving
Dimt a try. We arrived at 8pm on a Thursday evening.
Décor
The Décor was dark and the
lighting dim, no pun intended. There are many large looking
bulbs hanging from the ceiling. A separate Chinese styled door
opened up a separate room for family and business events at the
side of the restaurant where you can have your own space for
your private function. The menus are nice to hold and the
chopsticks are throwaways - so clean and hygienic. Dimt have
many Bonzi trees located around the restaurant.
Service
We were shown to our table and
left with a menu. Max came over immediately and it was
immediately obvious he had a brilliant attention to detail. He
was polite and knowledgeable. He showed us the dim sum on a
wheeled trolley. It does not look very attractive but dim sum
never does. Max always checked our food was to our liking and
recommended a number of dishes to try. He is an asset to the
restaurant.
Atmosphere
Even though the restaurant was
busy there was little atmosphere. The light music playing in the
background needed turning up and the staff could add more to the
vibe of Dim t, as there was no buzz nor the fast pace you would
expect in an establishment of this nature.
Food
Starter Ribs £5.50. The ribs
came out stacked in a square with a dish on the side full of
sauce. The 6 ribs were crispy and had chunks of tasty meat on
them. The sauce was tangy and sticky. This was certainly a
pleasant start to my meal. My guest however, had Chicken Satay
£4.35 from the specials section. This was disappointing. The
dish arrived quickly and was not the best sized dish. Three
small pieces of chicken with a tiny amount of sauce lacking in
peanuts came out. It was almost hardly worth ordering a starter.
Mains
My guest opted for the Shanghai
Lemon Chicken £7.95 from the specials section. Although the dish
came out well presented, the chicken was tough and the honey
sauce was like pure lemon juice. My guest was not impressed and
left most of this meal on the plate. We did not complain at the
time but we were bitterly disappointed – this was certainly not
a dish worthy of the title “special.”
I opted for the Crispy shredded
beef in sweet spicy sauce with rice £8.60, which was reasonably
tasty. I would have liked to have seen more sauce with this
dish. I was left wondering why this was also on the “specials”
menu as you could order this dish from any regular takeaway.
Desserts
We shared a dessert hoping to
somehow turn the evening around. To my surprise the white
chocolate cheesecake was fantastic and has to be right up there
with the best of them. I would recommend trying Dim t just for
this. It was soft, creamy and the crunchy biscuit had a
delightful texture. It crumbled in your mouth at every bite and
the cream soothed the top of your mouth.
Dim t is pleasant to look at,
but they need to have more options on their menu instead of
offering little more than a normal Chinese or Thai restaurant. I
will return to sample some more dishes in due course but
unfortunately this experience left in no rush to hurry back. |
