If
you think cricket and Milton Keynes, you might not have heard of
Great Horwood Cricket Club, a thriving village club which has
been in existence for more years than people can remember. It
moved to its current site on Nash Road Great Horwood at the
roundabout on the A421in 1962. At this stage there was only one
team playing friendly games at weekends and the changing rooms
consisted of the old Swanbourne Railway Station Waiting room
which became available courtesy of Sir Thomas Beecham’s closure
of that station as part of his reduction on national rail
services.
Today, the clubhouse has been extended and modernised to its
current position which includes a bar, large changing rooms and
showers as well as umpires’ facilities.
The Club has two Saturday league teams playing in the
Oxfordshire Cricket Association and a midweek team in the
Buckingham & District League. In addition to this, there is a
third Saturday team and a Sunday team both playing friendly
fixtures. The Club also has a Ladies team who regularly play
friendly fixtures on Sunday mornings and the Club hosts a highly
successful Ladies Six-a-Side tournament which this year is on 8
June. The club runs a Village 20:20 competition and this,
alongside the ladies competition, attracts teams from around the
area including Brackley, Gerrards Cross and, closer to home,
Thornborough and Marsh Gibbon.
Visitors
to these events and any other matches are welcome to come along
to the Club and make use of the facilities including the bar.
Whenever we have paid a visit oursleves, whether it was to enjoy
a pint whilst watching a midweek game after a hard day’s work,
or to enjoy a barbeque at the weekend, it has always been
immediately obvious that GHCC is a very family oriented club.
Consequently, it encourages children to come along and their
junior section now has over sixty members (both boys and girls)
from 8 years to 15 years old.
Anyone interested in joining the Club can
contact the club secretary whose details are available on this
website
www.greathorwoodcc.com. Surprisingly,
male playing membership is only £40 per annum. If you pay on
time, you’ll even get a discount! Junior membership is £15 per
annum. If you’re not in a position to play yourself, why not do
what we do, and get yourself down to watch a game and simply
relax in the summer sun? Social membership is just £10 and new
members are always made to feel welcome and you’ll feel part of
the club straight away.
Overall, GHCC is a very friendly, family oriented cricket club
in a lovely setting and well worth a visit in the summer.
