The
people of Bedford can count themselves pretty lucky. Having
recently taken over The Embankment, Peach Pubs have created a
gem of an establishment that is a world apart from many of the
other pubs you will find in the area.
We decided to sample their Spring menu and stay
the night. (To
read our review of The Embankment’s restaurant, please click
here).
When you approach The Embankment, there is a
small ‘A’ board which states “Pub with nice rooms.” The
management can be accused of being a little modest here, as
“nice” is a major, major understatement. Along with the pub
itself, all the rooms have been very tastefully refurbished with
many of the dark furnishings in-keeping with the buildings
character.
We decided to splash out and booked Room 102 with
riverside views. This is the perfect room for any special
occasion including use as a honeymoon suite. As you walk in, the
open bathroom is to the right, with a huge bath forming it’s
centrepiece. The bath is situated against a wall, which, to the
other side, you will find the biggest of king-sized beds.
There’s also a small coffee table with two comfortable leather
chairs.
The
bed has a huge mirror acting as a headboard which runs almost
the whole width of the wall. This room is simply grand,
sumptuous, and very stylish.
When we woke the next day we looked out of the
window and saw a flurry of activity. There were several swans in
the river, plenty of boats, joggers, walkers and cyclists doing
their thing. We decided to join these health conscious
individuals and sauntered downstairs for a gorgeous full English
breakfast!
The
bar was very peaceful. We started by choosing some of the fresh
juices and making ourselves some crumpets before choosing a
breakfast from the menu. I opted for the full English which was
a brilliant way to start the day. Was this one of the best
breakfasts I had ever had? Almost certainly! This will set you
back £9.50 which, although a little more expensive than you
would expect, is worth the price.
My partner opted for The Embankment Hash with
poached eggs with bacon £6.00. This was not totally what either
of us were expecting. You’ll be served a couple of poached eggs
on top of fried new potatoes, peppers, onions and bacon. This
was a huge dish and was more like a lunchtime meal – one my
partner struggled to finish. She did her best but I am not sure
her palette was ready for so many peppers and onions so early in
the day.
We returned to our amazing room and did not want
to check out. Comfortable, relaxing, luxurious and cosy, we were
sorry to be leaving. |
