This
toe-tapping, energetic and timeless musical by
Bill Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield in
association with Universal Music is the latest
smash hit musical direct from the West End to
come to Milton Keynes. The title song is one of
several in this compilation of nostalgic,
chart-topping songs, that will be familiar even
the youngest “wanna be” bobby-soxers!
The voice over
introduces the show explaining that everything
is performed live and you cannot help but be
bowled over by the extreme talent that fills the
stage.
The story itself is
fairly weak, which is I think intended to be
part of its charm. It’s the music that makes
Dreamboats and Petticoats so enjoyable – the
story, which is humorous in parts, is almost
irrelevant.
The show opens when
the now old aged Bobby finds an old “Dansette”
record player in the attic. We are transported
back to St. Mungos Youth Club in 1961, with the
ping-pong table and a national song writing
competition that he is so desperate to win.
Written by Laurence
Marks and Maurice Gran (the team behind
Goodnight Sweetheart), Dreamboats and Petticoats
is set in Essex, where the teen crushes of Bobby
and Laura (she’s, of course, “Bobby’s Girl”),
Norman and Sue (that’s “Run around Sue” who’s
free on Saturday night but half a crown the rest
of the week! ) – have fun on a youth club outing
to Southend.
Here, on the
carousels and dodgems, in a fantasy world of
coloured lights, hair quiffs and flared polka
dot dresses, we are treated to an extravaganza
of Phil Spector, Roy Orbison, Chubby Checker,
Neil Sedaka and more.
Directed by Bob
Tomson, this energetic, rock and roll production
is filled with fun, fresh faced and exuberant
performances by a fabulous cast. They are
wonderful collection of super, multi-talented
actors. Not only do they act - they sing with
total control AND play instruments and it would
be totally unfair to single out any individual
for praise.
What a show!
