This
restaurant review was taken on Saturday 24th January
We
visited Rigby’s on Burns night, Rabbie Burns, the Scottish poet
famous for saying “There
is no such uncertainty as a sure thing.” You will certainly
enjoy Rigby’s and be sure to have a wonderful time. The
restaurant is placed in the cute little village of Winslow, just
off the main square. Much to our disappointment we arrived a tad
too late to see the Scottish bag piper.
Décor
The walls are lined with local artwork that can
be purchased through owners Mark and Aimee. These paintings give
the restaurant character and an ever-changing look to this
establishment - no two weeks are the same. Rigby’s is a quaint
restaurant with just 10 tables, so please try and book in
advance. The seats are comfortable and the large windows at the
front of the restaurant allow the restaurant to receive lots of
light. Fresh flowers are displayed at the front of the
restaurant amongst the large sofas where you will see people
come in for coffees or wine to go with their chosen chocolates
during the day. Each table displays a gerbera, giving colour to
the room also.
Service
Mark, Aimee and one other usually run the show
making the service very personable, friendly and prompt. A good
chat usually takes place between dishes. The chef Richard is a
local man; you’ll often see him pop his head out of the kitchen
for a chat too. Once you dine in Rigby’s you’ll be sure to go
back just for the people. You will feel comfortable and part of
the family.
Food
As
this was a celebratory burns night the menu on the black board
stated just one choice for starters, mains and desserts. This
could have been a shame? What would we do if we and the other
guests did not like the options? Starters offered Scottish
broth, chunky pieces of meat, thick and gorgeous. This was a
piping hot dish and certainly filled the belly accompanied by
their warm crusty bread. The main dish was of course Haggis,
neaps and potatoes with onion gravy. Again this dish is filling
and perfect for a cold winter’s evening. The mash was creamy.
The large portion came heaped on my plate and gave me a peppery
taste
My guest does not like Haggis and was unaware of
the set menu on offer before we arrived. After enjoying her
Scottish broth we were in a dilemma, would we be able to have a
dish from their normal menu, it seems unachievable as every
other table had the burns menu. After a few moment of panic we
asked Mark politely if there was any chance of having a main
from their normal menu. Mark was laughing and joking, yes was
the answer. My guest selected the handmade meatballs with penne
pasta, completely different to my haggis. All the same, this
dish was thoroughly enjoyed - oven baked, the sauce produced
lots of flavour.
To finish we shared a cheese board that was very
yummy. This comes with bread as apposed to biscuits and this for
me, was the only downfall. I like a good cheese with a
traditional biscuit. I’m sure if I had asked Aimee and Mark
would have ran to a neighbour to make me happy. That’s how
caring they seem. My guest was surprised when the chef Richard
delivered a Raspberry chocolate cup with raspberry colai. He
asked us to try this for his Valentines Day menu. It looked
beautiful and the chocolate melted away in my mouth. The colai
was a circle of hearts….how cute!
Atmosphere
Scottish music played in the background making us
feel joyous and happy. Rigby’s has a wonderful vibrant
atmosphere.
I highly recommend Rigby’s. Mark, Aimee and
Richard are very friendly and produce good food. Take a visit
for a coffee, maybe some chocolates, a light lunch or a super
dinner - you will have a great time. |
