Swan Inn, Great Horwood

The Swan Inn, 1 Winslow Road, Great Horwood, Milton Keynes, MK17 0QN  T : 01296 712556
Opening times: Food served Mon to Fri 7pm to 9pm Tue to Fri 12noon to 2pm  Sat & Sun all day

The Swan Inn, Great Horwood is a little hidden treasure just 10 minutes from Central Milton Keynes. This establishment is very much an old fashioned, traditional English pub serving simple, yet tasty food which is locally sourced and cooked to order.

Décor

On entering the pub, the first thing to catch your eye is the inglenook fireplace with carriage lights either side. With low lying ceilings, beams, a mixture of fisherman chairs and church pew style booths; this is a charming and cosy pub. The restaurant is dimly lit, but there was a warm glow from the crackling fire that burned away as we took our seats

Food

A basket of warm, fresh French bread with butter was brought to our table and this was much enjoyed whilst we surveyed the choices of food available to us. The menu at the Swan is very simply presented with no fanciful descriptions of the food. The starters include Homemade Soup, Prawn Cocktail, Avocado with Crab and Smoked Salmon amongst others.

My guest quickly chose the Field Mushrooms with Goats Cheese (£4.50) and I opted for the Pate & Toast (£4). My guest was surprised at the size of his dish when his starter arrived. Two large mushrooms covered in tasty, melted Goats Cheese did of course form the centrepiece of the dish, but they were presented on very large bed of mixed salad. The mushrooms were piping hot, juicy and fresh, and despite the plate being left completely empty, my guest did comment that this was almost too much for a starter. We soon realised that anyone visiting the Swan would struggle to leave feeling hungry! My own choice of pate was delightful. Again, the portion was generous. You receive plenty of toast, a side of mixed salad and a chutney that left the taste buds itching for more. The pate is homemade, tasty, soft and moreish.

The main courses contain many of your traditional favourites including Liver Bacon and Onion, Beef Fillet, Fish Pie (topped with mash potato) and Steak and Chips. My guest’s choice of the Mixed Grill (£12.50) should only be ordered by those who are very hungry indeed! With a steak (ordered medium), fried egg, pork chop, breast of chicken, mushrooms, peas, tomatoes and chips I refused to believe my guest could finish this meal. They even had the cheek to moan that the only thing missing was a sausage. The steak melted in their mouth, and although the ratio of chips to peas was slightly out (far too many peas), my normally vocal guest said nothing and wiped the plate clean. The fat chips were perfectly cooked; crunchy, not oily, full of tasty potato and I can confidently say these are some of the better homemade chips you will find.

Swan Inn Great HorwoodAs my guest was enjoying their Mixed Grill I dived into my choice of Lemon Chicken, a curry with small, tender chicken served on a bed of boiled, soft, almost fluffy rice. The curry was very thick and creamy with a powerful taste of lemon. This was another large dish, and I was unable to finish it. As well as being full, this was probably also due to the fact that there was one overriding flavour to the dish and for myself at least, there was only so much lemon I could take.

Somehow, after a short pause, we found room for dessert. I tasted one of the best banoffee pies I’ve had for a very long time and if you have any kind of sweet tooth, you will simply love it! A ramekin arrived with a generous helping of cream placed on a bed of thick toffee. The rest of the ramekin was stacked with bananas on top of a thick biscuit base. Amazing.

Quite how my guest found the room for his Lemon Cheesecake is beyond me, but this was a beautifully presented dessert; a deep cheesecake which was colourful, creamy and refreshing.

Service

We were served by both the manager Catherine and her assistant Lucy. Everything was done with the minimum of fuss and we felt looked after for the duration of our stay.

Atmosphere

The Swan was relatively quiet although the games bar next door was extremely busy with many orders being placed for snacks and smaller dishes. The atmosphere comes through the décor, with the fireplace and beams creating a warm and cosy ambience.

In summary, the Swan is definitely the place to go to sample simple, yet tasty homemade cooking. All the produce is locally sourced and the food incredibly fresh and well presented.

Myself and three others arrived at the swan on a Friday evening after reading the review. It was very busy and there was a lovely atmosphere and a roaring fire. We were welcomed by a team of friendly staff, and were sat down on our already set up table with menus and our drinks at half past eight, the time at which we had booked. We all ordered starters (pate and prawn cocktail) which were generous portions and very tasty. I ordered a rare fillet steak for my main course, which was cooked too perfection, however the chips were not homemade but were still extremely nice and crunchy. My family that were eating with me were also pleased with their meals. We felt very relaxed and welcomed and were surprised when we did not have to leave our seats once in order to receive a drink from the bar as the staff catered to all of our needs. We hope to be visiting this pub again in the near future. Good value for money! Richard Brooks, 30 November 2008
We stumbled across The Swan approximately 6 months ago and have been going there quite regularly ever since because the food quality is superb, something you cannot find in the micro waved restaurants in Milton Keynes. This is good, fresh, home cooked food to order, which is why your table is booked at a certain time as the meal is freshly prepared for your order. We have always found Kate and her staff to be extremely friendly. We feel this is a country pub where you come to relax over a fantastic meal, if you want fast micro waved food with immediate service you might possibly consider McDonalds. We would give this pub 10 out of 10 for brilliant food, friendly staff and great atmosphere. Gill Price, 30 November 2008
We visited this pub because of the given review on here. Our experience was very different. When we rang to book the table we were told that although we would like to book at 7pm we would have to wait until 730pm as there was already a table booked in for that time. When we arrived there was indeed another table eating however the rest of the bar was empty. There was no warm bread given to us much to my disappointment!

The starters we ordered were pate, prawn cocktail and for the two children salmon and prawns and a small salad. The pate was nice but did not taste homemade. All the dishes came with an over abundance of salad leaves.

For the main courses we ordered the lemon chicken and expecting a thick sauce as described were bitterly disappointed to get what can only be described as a lemon glazed chicken on stodgy rice; no thick creamy sauce here. The rest ordered fillet steak but unfortunately they only had 2 available for a Friday night and so one rump had to be ordered. The fillet steaks were cooked very well and were tasty and tender, although the rump was a little over cooked.... and the biggest disappointment of all had to be the chips – homemade?

Onto the desserts - the sponge was hard on the sticky toffee pudding and they had no ice cream. The service? It was slow and not a smile to be offered from any of the staff and we felt that we were very much an inconvenience. This was one of our worst meals experiences and we will not be returning. We had a different experience. We phoned to book a table and the lady we spoke to told us that there was a birthday party booked before us and that she would get Katie (the owner I guess ) to phone us back to ensure a table was booked. Katie did phone us back and assured us that there would be a vacant table by nine o'clock . We arrived at 9pm to be told that there was no confirmed booking for us "was Katie a friend."  I said she could be if we got a meal tonight !! However a table was found (in the bar) and we had our meal. Unlike the reviewer we were only served one mushroom with the goats cheese . The staff were incredibly friendly and the service was fine, the food was so so.

I personally believe that this is not a restaurant with a pub attached, more a pub that serves food. Having said this , we had no idea where to go, it was a spur of the moment decision and MK Reviews gave us a great choice to choose from. Rod Cox, 20 October 2008
