Hidden away in
Shenley Lodge you will find The Old Beams. I would recommend you
use your sat nav or taxi driver to find this lovely pub. The Old
Beams is a traditional pub that has been tastefully refurbished
and but still retains charm. It is surrounded by a large garden
and a large pond. There are plenty of tables and umbrellas that
make it a perfect spot on a warm summer’s day.
Atmosphere
A busy, vibrant bar with lots of friendly locals. Good for a
couple of nice glasses of wine or chilled beers.
Service
When ordering your meal you need to be seated, once you have
chosen from the menu, you can go back up to the bar and order.
This brings down the food prices as less staff are required.
There are plenty of staff manning the bar so there’s no waiting
around for drinks. The staff were friendly when delivering the
food, although they seemed very rushed with no time for chit
chat.
Décor
The pub has cream walls with “Old beams” supporting the
building, wooden flooring and a couple of fire places. Specials
can be found dotted around between the pillars. It has a fresh
look.
Food
Mushroom, chili, salad, breadcrumbs
The mushroom was large with lots of bread crumbs sealed to it. I
would have liked two mushrooms for my money but the textures
were good from crunchy bread crumbs to the soft tasteful
mushroom. A good starter to wet your appetite.
Tomato soup rustic bread
The tomato soup came out very warm as did the bread which was
delightful with butter and a crack of black pepper and sea salt.
Sunday roast
beef
The dish arrived with a large portion of potatoes and generous
cuts of beef. The vegetables were slightly overcooked. But the
Yorkshire puddings made up for this. The gravy was also very hot
and helped finish off a good roast to entice me back for more in
the future.
Fish and
chips
The waiter suggested I have the fish and chips and said it was
more like “Whale and chips”, so of course I had to try this. I
must admit the fish was huge, although the batter was slightly
over done. The fish inside was a beautiful white, fell apart on
my fork and had lots of taste. The chips were not greasy and
plentiful. I asked for a side of bread to make a butty!
The Old Beams have a Kids menu called “Little angels” £3.95
over all good portions and good value for money
Burgers / Fish & Chips / Chicken Chunks / Pasta / Ice cream
£1.95
I thoroughly enjoyed the Old Beams and will visiting plenty of
times during the summer months. The garden is delightful and the
food is of a high standard. I would have liked table service but
at the same time I like cheap prices. Takes some friends and
enjoy the atmosphere. |
